Cataract is the clouding of the natural lens. Due to the natural aging process, eye proteins break down and clump together in the lens.
These lumps gradually accumulate, preventing light from passing through the lens. Over time, they become so thick that they interfere with normal vision. Untreated cataracts can lead to total vision loss.
In the early stages of cataracts, you are unlikely to notice changes in vision. But over time, you may have the following symptoms:
- Blurred vision
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Poor night vision
- Double vision in one eye
- Faded colors
- Frequent changes in the prescription of contact lenses or glasses.
The treatment is surgical and consists of removing the cataract by means of advanced microsurgical techniques and replacing it with an intraocular lens.
A wide variety of intraocular lenses are available and can correct refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism) as well as presbyopia. The choice of the intraocular lens will be based on the patient’s requirements as well as on a thorough examination in the consultations supported by specific complementary tests.
