Presbyopia is the loss of near vision that usually occurs around age forty. A healthy crystalline lens (our lens) is flexible and can elongate or flatten to focus on objects at different distances. As the lens ages, it becomes stiffer and less elastic. This phenomenon causes us to be unable to focus on close objects. The initial symptom is the loss of near vision and it is typical to move away the object we cannot focus on in order to see it clearly. The treatment of presbyopia is based on support with near addition glasses, use of multifocal contact lenses, excimer laser treatment or clear lens replacement surgery with the implantation of a customized intraocular lens for each patient. The choice of treatment will be based on the degree of presbyopia, a thorough examination in consultations supported with specific complementary tests, as well as the circumstances and personal requirements of each patient.
